Raising Mothers is growing and we’re looking for ambitious and dedicated writers, editors and thinkers to join us as we continue to grow and create. Raising Mothers’ staff is comprised of people who approach their work with initiative and self-motivation; there is a large degree of both creative liberty and personal responsibility. We work collaboratively towards a collective vision and mission. 

We are all femmes of color and seek to work with femmes of color and other marginalized groups of color. Those applications will be prioritized. 

Any position listed here is still open for applications. Due to our small staff, we are only able to contact applicants we are interested in moving forward with. All Raising Mothers positions are based entirely online/remote and are voluntary. Hours can vary.  

ASSOCIATE  AND ASSISTANT EDITORS

We are currently seeking Associate and Assistant Editors in the following categories: Fiction, Poetry, Essay, Culture, Interviews, Book Reviews. We are seeking applicants with editorial experience in a literary context, who resonate with our mission to expand publishing by prioritizing the works of marginalized writers. Associate Editors work closely with our editorial team, communicate with contributor on edits, and manage our submission queues and readership teams. Applicants must have an ability to critically analyze literary work, a distinct, creative voice, and a commitment to community. Associate Editors must be able to work independently reliably, and follow through on commitments. Associate Editors should hold a high standard of excellence in their editorial practice, have an understanding of literary form and narrative, and be eager to welcome new ways of navigating and contributing to contemporary literature dialogue.

The Assistant Editor will work closely with the Associate Editor in reviewing and responding to submissions, maintaining and supporting communication of past and current Raising Mothers writers, and contributing to the overall demeanor, aesthetic, and direction of your sectionof the journal. We seek motivated applicants who have previous experience in publishing and who understand the fundamentals of collaboration with a remote team.

INTERVIEWS EDITOR

We also seek an Interviews Editor to help with generating interviews for our Interviews section, and shorter Q&As for our Newsletters. Interested candidates should be familiar with the literature scene, and have an interview or two under their belt to show as samples. They should also demonstrate resourcefulness and have solicited material before. 

NEWSLETTER EDITOR 

We seek a Newsletter Editor to curate our Raising Mothers newsletter sent out monthly, as well as assist with special newsletters that go out quarterly. The candidate must demonstrate impeccable copy and organizational skills. Please submit a suitable writing sample along with your application materials. 
 

READING COMMITTEE

If you are interested in serving on Raising Mothers’ reading committee for fiction, poetry, or nonfiction, let us know by sending us your resume. We’re particularly interested in readers who demonstrate that they’re already fans of Raising Mothers and have an innate understanding of our aesthetic and style. 

The ideal applicant is:

  • An avid and attentive reader
  • Self-motivated and able to meet deadlines
  • Able to express herself/their self clearly in writing


COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Our Communications Manager will help with communications on Social Media, the Site, and in our Newsletter. They will help to generate external communications (including, but not restricted to: press releases, media kits, interviews, etc.). Only the most meticulous candidates, capable of generating impeccable copy, need apply. 

GRAPHIC DESIGNER / ILLUSTRATOR

Crucial to building our brand image, good Graphic Designers and Illustrators are always in high demand at Raising Mothers! Team members in this role cover the artistic need of our many departments. Please submit a portfolio along with your application.
